What's up E-commerce – July 18, 2025

The e-commerce news of the week you can't miss! - July 18, 2025

Brand

🌞 Introduction

The consolidation of the European fashion market is accelerating with bold maneuvers, while French e-commerce continues to defy expectations with its impressive growth. This week, the numbers speak for themselves: the sector not only has the wind in its sails but is also becoming deeply embedded in consumer habits, crossing new historic thresholds. As giants reshape the competitive landscape, brands are exploring new territories, from social commerce on TikTok to hybrid experiences that blend physical and digital. But this excitement comes with very real challenges: rising logistics costs, new regulatory requirements for accessibility... Innovation is no longer an option, but a condition for survival. Welcome to your weekly recap for July 11 to July 18, 2025.

📢 E-commerce & Shopping

🤝 Zalando finalizes the acquisition of its competitor ABOUT YOU. The German online fashion giant now holds 91.45% of ABOUT YOU's share capital. Approved by the European Commission, this acquisition aims to create a unified B2B technology ecosystem while maintaining the distinct B2C identities of both brands, with a target of an additional €100 million in EBIT per year. 📈 The French e-commerce market surpasses the €175 billion mark. According to the Fevad's 2025 report, the sector generated €175.3 billion in 2024, a 9.3% increase. This growth is driven by a rise in transaction volumes, signaling a lasting adoption of digital by French consumers. The €200 billion mark is expected to be reached by 2026. (www.fevad.com)

⚖️ New digital accessibility rules come into force. Since June 28, 2025, the European Accessibility Act has imposed new standards on e-commerce sites and mobile applications to ensure access for people with disabilities. Very small businesses are currently exempt from this major regulatory obligation. (www.ecommercemag.fr)

🚚 Logistics costs under pressure in France. The geopolitical context and inflation continue to drive up logistics costs for French e-merchants. This pressure on margins is forcing industry players to innovate and further automate their supply chains to control delivery costs and secure their supplies. (www.ecommercemag.fr)

🛒 ChatGPT is preparing to integrate product purchasing with Shopify. OpenAI plans to allow users to buy products directly within its interface, without external redirection. Conducted in partnership with Shopify, this project would see OpenAI take a commission on each transaction, transforming the chatbot into a genuine marketplace and a direct competitor to Google for product discovery. But at the same time…

🚧 Shopify sets limits on autonomous shopping bots. In parallel with these new partnerships, the platform has quietly updated the robots.txt file for its millions of stores. A new directive discourages "autonomous purchasing agents" that complete an order without human validation, aiming to channel developers towards its own Checkout Kit and maintain control over its ecosystem. 📣 Marketing & Ads

📱 Boulanger launches on TikTok Shop to attract young people. The home appliance retailer has become the first major French brand in its sector to open a store on TikTok Shop. This initiative aims to capture a younger audience and test the new dynamics of social commerce by creating bridges between its digital channels and physical stores. (www.ecommercemag.fr)

🔗 The purchasing journey is becoming increasingly hybrid. Nearly a third of French consumers now systematically combine physical and digital channels. While in-store advice is seeing a resurgence, the experience is enhanced by digital tools such as mobile apps, real-time stock consultation, and personalized notifications. (www.ecommercemag.fr)

🗺️ American Eagle innovates on Snapchat to attract customers to stores. The American fashion brand is the first to use "Promoted Places" on the Snap Map to highlight its 800 stores. By targeting the map's 400 million users, it merges digital discovery with physical traffic, a powerful omnichannel strategy for Generation Z. (www.modernretail.co)

🤖 AI & Tech

🤖 AI-powered shopping assistants are becoming standard. The demand for conversational assistants is exploding as brands seek to offer ultra-personalized shopping experiences. These "virtual salespeople" are now integrated to guide customers, answer their questions 24/7, and influence purchase decisions, thereby increasing conversion rates and customer loyalty.
